Mike Saul – Horn

Michael Saul, principal horn of The Quincy Symphony Orchestra and a member since 1976, is retired from the Hannibal Public Schools where he served as co-director for the high school band, director of jazz bands and brass specialist. Mike also assisted with middle school bands. In addition to his work at Hannibal, Mike has served as an adjunct faculty member at Quincy University and Culver-Stockton College and is currently a member of the Quincy Public Schools music faculty teaching elementary string students and serving as the director of QHS Jazz Band II. Mike also is employed by Hannibal-LaGrange University as a field supervisor for student teachers. He holds Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Illinois State University. In addition to performing with the QSO, Mike is a forty-three year member of the Quincy Park Band and plays horn for the 12th Street Brass Quintet. Mike’s horn teachers have included Dale Clevenger, Roger Collins, Randall Faust and his long-time friend and former QSO colleague, the late, great Donald Hatch. In 1989, Mike received the Outstanding Soloist Award at the North American Brass Band Championship Competition in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mike has many years of experience as a festival judge both in solo/ensemble and large group settings and has been a guest conductor/clinician for high school bands in Illinois and Missouri. He maintains a private lesson studio, teaching horn students of all ages from beginners to adults.
