Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association Holds Auditions for Orchestra, Chorus, Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorus

The Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association invites area musicians to participate in its 2019-20 Concert Season. The QSOA includes:

The Quincy Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Phyllis Robertson, is welcoming new singers. The chorus is a fun and talented group of musicians from all walks of life. Musicians in this year’s ensemble will have the opportunity to participate in a European concert tour. The chorus rehearses from 7 to 9:15 p.m. Mondays beginning Aug. 26 and will present concerts on Dec. 7 and March 7. They will join the Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Chorus on April 24 for a large-scale season finale concert. Auditions for the Symphony Chorus will be Aug. 12 beginning at 5 p.m. Interested singers should prepare a solo, patriotic song or Christmas carol and call the symphony office for a time slot. Those who have sung with the chorus in the past are not required to re-audition.

The Quincy Symphony Orchestra, directed by Dr. Bruce Briney, will perform four full programs throughout the season. Symphony concert dates are Sept. 29, Nov. 16, Feb. 9 and April 24. In addition, the QSO will perform children’s educational concerts in March.

The orchestra has immediate openings for 2nd and 3rd Horn. Applicants for these positions will be asked to perform a solo of their choice, and orchestral excerpts. Players are needed for all string sections, and additional brass, woodwind, and percussion players are needed for works with larger instrumentation and for the substitute list. Musicians should prepare a short solo that displays their musical strengths.

Instrumental auditions will be Thursday evening, Aug. 29. The QSO rehearses from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Singers in grades three through 12 are invited to audition for the 2019-20 Quincy Area Youth Chorus. Accepted singers will perform with the QAYC at two of their own concerts as well as join the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on April 24 for a season finale.

Auditions for the QAYC will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 10 a.m. or by appointment. Auditioning children should prepare a song they enjoy singing.  QAYC includes girls, and boys with unchanged voices, in two performing groups:  The Kinderchor for the younger singers is directed by Amy Fairchild and the Concert Choir for older members is directed by Paul Shelor.  Rehearsals are held either on Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons.

The Quincy Area Youth Orchestra will hold auditions for its 2019-20 season in early October.  All new and returning members must audition. QAYO candidates must be in grades 7-12 and have at least three years of playing experience (qualified 6th graders will be considered). Membership may be limited to maintain a proper balance of instruments in the orchestra. Students should prepare material found on the youth orchestra page of qsoa.org, along with a solo of their choice. Those selected to the QAYO will rehearse weekly through March and perform in two concerts.

To sign up for an audition time with the symphony orchestra, symphony chorus, youth chorus or youth orchestra, call the symphony office at 217-222-2856 Monday through Friday, or email [email protected]. More information on our performing ensembles may be found at www.qsoa.org.
