“American Spirit” Choral Concert salutes American Songwriters

The Quincy Symphony Chorus, conducted by Dr. Phyllis Robertson, will present American Spirit at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ.

American Spirit celebrates the genius of songwriters from the United States and includes a wide variety of musical styles.  Songs performed include “Canticle of Praise,” “Bought Me a Cat” and “Praise to Music.”

A special feature of the evening will be the performance of “The World Beloved:  A Bluegrass Mass” by Carol Barnett. This piece blends the classical mass, modern choral sophistication, touching poetry and traditional bluegrass instrumentation into an exhilarating musical experience. Banjo, fiddle, guitar and bass musicians join with the choir to create a sound that is both playful and joyful, melodic and rhythmic.

The Silver Baton Concert Sponsor for American Spirit is Quincy Medical Group. The Media Sponsor is StarRadio/WTAD and the Maestro Music Sponsor is Advance Physical Therapy.

The Symphony Chorus is a volunteer community group. Members from all generations and walks of life come together for fellowship and enjoyment of music. The chorus performs three concerts each season. Auditions are under way for new members who would like to sing with the Quincy Symphony Orchestra at the Holiday Festival Family Concert on Dec. 3, or the Songs of our History pops concert on March 4.

American Spirit tickets will be available at the door or in advance at Quincy Hy-Vee stores, Sturhahn Jewelers or the symphony office, 200 N. 8th. Individual concert tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for senior citizens. Children 18 and under are encouraged to attend with their families, and will be admitted free thanks, in part, to grants from the Tracy Family Foundation and the Community Foundation.

Season tickets offer a great savings over single ticket prices. Season tickets are available now, and include all QSOA concerts through April at $70 for adults or $60 for seniors. A special promotional offer allows new season ticket holders to get two season tickets for the price of one.

Golden Baton Sponsors for all concerts of the QSOA 2016-17 season are The Knapheide Manufacturing Company and Blessing Health System. Partial support has been received from the Illinois Arts Council Agency and Ameren Illinois.
